The Gaige House: A Tranquil Retreat in Glen Ellen
Tucked into a peaceful corner of Sonoma’s Valley of the Moon, the Gaige House in Glen Ellen welcomes travelers with the air of a well-kept secret. Surrounded by old oaks, Japanese maples, and the soft rippling of Calabazas Creek, this tranquil inn is a study in calm. Though it has quietly amassed accolades from Condé Nast Traveler and the Michelin Guide, the Gaige House retains a retreat-like allure that feels a world away from Sonoma’s more well-traveled paths.

A Heritage Home with a Zen Soul
Originally built by Albert Gaige in the late 1800s, the Gaige House’s two-story main home was later converted to a boutique hotel in the 1980s. In 2006, architect Paul Discoe and designer Paul Davis led a transformative renovation that blended Japanese design principles and inspiration from traditional Kyoto ryokans with modern wine country sophistication. Their work established a soothing aesthetic with curated minimalism and tranquil gardens that continue to distinguish the property today.
This spring, the Gaige House unveiled newly renovated suites in the historic main house, each imbued with Zen-inspired tranquility. The Enso Suite opens completely to a private fire-lit patio with accordion glass doors, while the Woodside Suite pairs a dramatic black fireplace with serene views. The suites all feature wet bars, dual-sink vanities, walk-in showers, and a design language that echoes the property’s Japanese influences.

The Ryokan Experience
For a deeper sense of retreat, the Ryokan Zen Creekside and Garden Suites offer an immersive experience inspired by traditional Japanese inns. Each suite features oversized granite soaking tubs and interior courtyard rock gardens with fountains and Japanese maples. Vaulted ceilings, gas fireplaces, kimono robes, and private patios overlooking a seasonal creek complete the sense of sanctuary.

Rest and Reconnect
Across the grounds, beauty and stillness unfold in surprising ways. Curl up in the cocoon-like loungers beside the heated year-round pool. After dusk, gather around enchanting fire pits on the Moon Deck or Sun Deck. Beside the creek, a meditation alcove offers a peaceful space for yoga or reflection. In the Spa Sanctuary Room, a range of massage services invite deep relaxation.

With every season, the gardens shift: magnolias bloom in spring, hydrangeas brighten summer paths, and in autumn, the Japanese maples turn ablaze with fiery reds.
Every evening, a complimentary wine hour is served by the fire in the front parlor features local wines and savory bites. Each morning, guests are treated to a full breakfast with a signature entrée that changes daily. Complimentary sake, brandy, and iced tea are available throughout the day. In addition, free parking and WiFi are also included.
