Endless Summer in Laid-Back Cayucos
The laid-back beach town of Cayucos is an idyllic destination for enjoying endless summers that stretch well into fall. Located right off Highway 1, but a bit off the beaten track, Cayucos beckons with uncrowded beaches, surf, sunshine, and small-town charm.
Upon arrival, get your bearings by strolling out along the historic fishing pier. The pier was built in the late 1800s by Captain James Cass who turned this swath of Central California coastline into a shipping port. But these days, surfers far outnumber seafarers. On any given day, you’ll find surfers catching waves, sea otters playing in the water, and whales spouting on the horizon.
At low tide, Cayuco’s sandy beach extends five miles south to Morro Bay, creating an unbroken expanse of sand for runners and beachcombers. Low tide also reveals fascinating tidepools brimming with sea anemones and crabs.
Along the craggy coastline to the north, Estero Bluffs offers great hikes along the bluffs with stunning views and secret coves. Weaving through the grassy hills rising above town, mountain biking and hiking trails offer heart-pumping adventures with great views as well.
Lining Cayucos’ charming main street, you’ll find trendy boutiques, antique stores, surf shops, and several cafes with outdoor dining. At Lunada Garden Bistro you can feast on fresh, local cuisine in a historic property amid blooming gardens. The Hidden Kitchen serves up organic gluten-free fare featuring delicious blue-corn waffles and smoothies on a beachfront patio. Another popular draw is the Brown Butter Cookie Company, which lures tourists with free samples of their addictive cookies.
Cayucos is especially lovely in the fall. The warm sunshine lingers well into autumn and bathes everything in a golden light. With school back in session, the uncrowded beaches are even quieter, making long strolls along the beach all the more romantic.
Beyond the beach, the beautiful back roads of Paso Robles wine country beckon with the chance to discover amazing new wines. You can also cruise up Highway 1 to check out the artisans’ collective in Harmony, visit the enchanting extravagance of Hearst Castle, or even take a drive along the legendary Big Sur coastline.
