House Baked Soda Bread

The White Swan Inn’s Breakfast Staple


Servings: Yields 1 Loaf

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp salt

3/4 tsp baking soda

3/4 tsp baking powder

2 cups buttermilk


1. Grease and flour a loaf pan
2. Sift all dry ingredients together into a large mixing bowl
3. Add buttermilk and mix dough by hand until consistency is even*
4. Place dough in loaf pan
5. Dust top of dough with flour
6. Score top of dough with a knife
7. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 1 hour or until crust is golden brown
8. Enjoy with fresh marmalade or apple butter
*Note: if dough is too dry add a little buttermilk
